If you are travelling from Thimphu to Trashigang, upon reaching the passes you will see that suddenly your vegetation turns to yellowish-brown. Sometimes you might think what it might be. Its just simple because there is recent talk in media about "dying bamboo and loosing income of the people of bamboo growing areas".
I didn't care much when i saw such changes because i was thinking that, it might be the old ones that are dying. The recent news i heard from one of my cousi, is that now even new shoots are also not growing. He went to get bamboo for making bamboo mat for his homely use. On his reaching to the bamboo area he had to search usable bamboos for a long time, earlier it was just "go-get" job. After much difficulty he could get his load of bamboo, but now the story goes for tieing his load. Earlier we use to remove the outer layer of bamboo shoots (tsa) to be used as rope for binding up the bamboos together.
This is a pretty good proof that the bamboo is on verge of extinction.
Now my worry started hearing after hearing this news. It is for sure that bamboo is going to be extinct if the new shoots doesn't grow. What will happen to economy and human life without these bamboos. These are some of the questions, arising deep in my mind. Its solvable if old one dies and new shoot sprouts out but this is not happenning .
Where are the thoughts of our environmentalists, policy makers, greeners, economists, conservationist and future leaders are going. This is a very important issue to be taken care of.
